- Claude Code (Anthropic) and Codex (OpenAI) are AI coding agents that read your project, edit files and run commands.
- Both start at $20 a month: Claude Pro for Claude Code, ChatGPT Plus for Codex.
- Codex has limited free access in its desktop app; Claude Code needs a paid plan.
- Both run in the terminal, code editors, a desktop app and the cloud; pick the one whose AI you already use.
Claude Code from Anthropic and Codex from OpenAI are the two best-known AI coding agents. Unlike a chatbot that only suggests code, an agent reads your whole project, edits files, runs commands and tests, and can open pull requests for you. Both now run in the terminal, in code editors, in a desktop app and in the cloud. So which one should you pick? Here is a plain-English comparison of what they do, where they run and what they cost in October 2026.
The short answer
| Claude Code | OpenAI Codex | |
|---|---|---|
| Made by | Anthropic | OpenAI |
| Models | Claude models (Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5; Fable on higher plans) | OpenAI GPT models (GPT-6.1 Sol became the default in October 2026) |
| Where it runs | Terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, desktop app, web (claude.ai/code), iOS and Android | Desktop app, terminal (CLI), IDE extension, web (cloud tasks), iOS |
| Free access | No: needs a paid Claude plan or API account | Limited: the Free and Go plans can use the desktop app for light local tasks |
| Cheapest full plan | Claude Pro: $20/month ($17/month billed yearly) | ChatGPT Plus: $20/month |
| Heavy-use plans | Max 5x $100/month, Max 20x $200/month | Pro plans from $100/month to $200/month (and a $500 tier, per recent guides) |
| Pay per use | Yes, with an API key (no session caps) | Yes, with an API key (no 5-hour or weekly caps) |
In short: both cost $20 a month to start, and both are excellent. The best choice usually depends on which company's AI you already pay for, and on the extras you need.
What is Claude Code?
Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. Its documentation describes it as a tool that "reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools". You describe what you want in plain language, and Claude Code plans the approach, writes code across several files and checks that it works.
- Where: a full-featured terminal app (CLI), extensions for VS Code (and Cursor) and JetBrains IDEs, the Claude desktop app's Code tab, the web at claude.ai/code for long cloud tasks, and the Claude mobile app to start and follow tasks on the go.
- Extras: project instructions in a
CLAUDE.mdfile (it can also readAGENTS.md), reusable skills, hooks, MCP connections to tools like Google Drive or Jira, sub-agents that work in parallel, scheduled tasks, GitHub Actions, automatic code review and a Slack integration. - Install: one command in the terminal, or download the desktop app and open the Code tab. The desktop app requires a paid subscription.
What is OpenAI Codex?
Codex is OpenAI's coding agent, included with ChatGPT plans. It does the same core job: it reads a project, makes changes, runs commands and can hand back a pull request.
- Where: the Codex desktop app, an open-source terminal app (Codex CLI), an IDE extension, cloud tasks you start from the web, and the ChatGPT iOS app.
- Recent changes: OpenAI ships CLI updates almost weekly. In October 2026 these included GPT-6.1 Sol as the default model, managed Git worktrees, pinned tasks, live steering of a response with follow-up messages, and reusable prompt presets.
- Free taste: unlike Claude Code, Codex has limited free access through the ChatGPT Free and Go plans, in the desktop app only. The CLI and cloud tasks start with Plus.
Pricing compared
Claude Code
- Free: Claude Code is not included.
- Pro: $20/month, or $17/month billed yearly. Includes Claude Code.
- Max 5x: $100/month, five times Pro usage. Max 20x: $200/month.
- Team: from $20/seat a month billed yearly ($25 monthly); premium seats with more usage cost $100-125.
- API: pay per token through the Anthropic Console, without session or weekly caps.
Pro and Max limits are shared with the Claude apps: a five-hour session limit plus a weekly limit. Anthropic no longer publishes fixed message counts.
OpenAI Codex
- Free ($0) and Go ($8/month): light local tasks in the desktop app only, with no credit top-ups.
- Plus: $20/month. Full access on web, CLI, IDE and iOS, with a usage window every 5 hours plus a weekly limit; you can buy extra credits.
- Pro: $100/month (5x) or $200/month (20x), with no 5-hour window but weekly limits. Recent guides also list a $500/month tier.
- Business: about $20-25 per user a month; Enterprise is custom.
- API: pay per token with an API key.
Both companies change limits often. OpenAI paused and restored its 5-hour window for Plus during 2026, and Anthropic raised its weekly limits in September 2026. Check the official pricing pages before you subscribe.
Key differences that matter
- Trying it for free: Codex wins. You can try it in the desktop app on a free ChatGPT account, while Claude Code needs at least Claude Pro.
- Where you work: both cover the terminal, IDEs, a desktop app and the cloud. Claude Code adds JetBrains support, Slack and Android; Codex has its own standalone desktop app with a command center for agents.
- Which AI writes your code: Claude Code uses Claude models; Codex uses OpenAI's GPT models. If you already prefer one assistant for writing and reasoning, you will probably feel at home with its coding agent.
- One subscription for everything: if you pay for ChatGPT Plus, Codex is already included; if you pay for Claude Pro, so is Claude Code. Most people don't need both.
- Customisation: both read a project instructions file (
AGENTS.md; Claude Code also usesCLAUDE.md) and connect to outside tools with MCP. Claude Code puts extra emphasis on skills, hooks and sub-agents.
Can a beginner use them?
Yes, more than ever. You don't need to be a professional developer: both tools can build a simple website, a small script or an app prototype from a plain-English description, explain errors and fix them. The desktop apps are the friendliest place to start, because you see every change before accepting it. Two pieces of advice for non-developers:
- Start with a small project and keep a copy (or Git history) so you can undo changes.
- Read what the agent wants to run before you approve it, especially commands that delete files or publish something.
If you prefer an AI-first code editor instead of an agent, see Cursor.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Codex if you already pay for ChatGPT, or want to try an AI coding agent without paying first.
- Choose Claude Code if you already use Claude, work in JetBrains IDEs, or want deep customisation with skills, hooks, sub-agents and Slack.
- Heavy daily coding: both have $100 and $200 plans; pick the one whose model gives you better results on your own code.
Our advice is the same as in our ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude test: give both the same real task from your own project, and keep the one that gets it right with fewer corrections.
