- Claude Duet, announced October 21, 2026, is a proactive AI agent that reaches out before you ask.

- It is a research preview for US Claude Pro and Max subscribers, via a waitlist, on the web and iOS.
Anthropic has launched Claude Duet, a new kind of AI assistant that doesn't wait for you to ask. It checks your connected apps, sends you a morning brief, alerts you when something needs attention and can complete tasks on its own, with your approval for anything sensitive. Here is what Duet does, who can use it and how it compares to a normal chatbot. Duet is in a US-only research preview, so this is an explainer based on Anthropic's announcement and press coverage, not a hands-on test.
What is Claude Duet?
Claude Duet is a standalone proactive AI agent from Anthropic, announced on October 21, 2026. Where a chatbot answers when you write to it, Duet "reaches out before you ask". It is built on Claude Opus 5.5 and aimed at professionals and small business owners with a lot to keep track of.
What can it do?
- Morning brief: a short summary of what matters today across your connected apps, such as Gmail and Slack
- Regular check-ins: it looks at your apps every few hours and alerts you when something needs attention
- Tasks in the cloud: it has its own virtual machine and browser, so it can work without access to your computer
- From small to big jobs: simple admin tasks, up to more complex work such as building a web app
- One ongoing thread: instead of separate chats, everything happens in a single continuous conversation
- Uses your Claude setup: memory, skills and connected apps from your Claude account, so there is little to configure
Safety and approvals
Because Duet acts on your behalf, Anthropic built in controls:
- It asks for approval before sending a message, making a payment, signing a document or deleting a file.
- It does not see your passwords or logins when you give it account access.
- A dedicated classifier and safety prompt check each message to guard against leaks of sensitive information.
Who can use it, and on what?
| Status | Research preview, via a waitlist |
|---|---|
| Who | Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the United States |
| Platforms | Web and a standalone Duet iOS app |
| Cost | Uses your existing Claude plan limits; background check-ins count toward them |
Outside the US, or on the free plan, you cannot use it yet. Plans and prices for Claude are covered in our guide to what Claude can do.
Duet vs a normal chatbot
| Chat assistant | Claude Duet | |
|---|---|---|
| Who starts | You ask | Duet reaches out first |
| Conversations | Many separate chats | One ongoing thread |
| Takes actions | Mostly answers and creates content | Completes tasks in its own cloud browser, with approvals |
| Watches your apps | Only when asked | Checks every few hours |
Duet arrives in a busy race: press coverage names Meta's Muse agent and OpenAI's Dots agent as its main competitors.
Should small businesses care?
For a freelancer or small team drowning in emails and messages, an assistant that summarises the day and flags what needs a reply could save real time. The trade-offs are the ones to watch with any agent: it needs access to your apps, background checks use up your plan's limits, and you should keep approvals on for anything that sends, pays or deletes. If you want simpler planning tools today, Taskade and ClickUp include AI features without the waitlist.
The bottom line
Claude Duet moves Claude from "answer when asked" to "keep an eye on things for you": a morning brief, regular alerts and tasks done in the cloud, with approvals for anything sensitive. For now it is a US-only research preview for Pro and Max subscribers, so most people will have to wait, but it shows where AI assistants are heading.
